Accurate prediction of safety remains a major challenge in drug development. Common safety problems that arise include cardiotoxicity, hepatotoxicity and nephrotoxicity.  In vitro tests are routinely run in preclinical development in an attempt to rapidly eliminate unsafe compounds and promote promising potential candidates. Progress has been made in developing higher-throughput techniques for the early detection of compounds causing problems in the heart, liver and kidney. When it comes to in vivo screening one of the major challenges is accurately predicting human drug toxicity with nonhuman animal models.

Preclinical Drug Safety 2009 will evaluate the in vitro & in vivo toxicity screens in use today, assess how far computational tools have come in helping to predict compound toxicity and review imaging technologies used in safety prediction. Some discussion will be included on idiosyncratic and mitochondrial toxicity. A full session will be dedicated to efforts being made to improve predictive preclinical models with special mention of species (e.g. rat-to-man) issues.

Attend to learn more.

Topics to be Covered:

  • An Evaluation of In Vitro & In Vivo Toxicity Screening

  • Hepatoxicity Assay Development & Screening

  • Cardiovascular Safety Evaluation

  • Nephrotoxicity Assay Development & Screening

  • Computational Tools for Predicting Compound Toxicity

  • Imaging & Safety Screening

  • Mitochondrial Toxicity Testing in Drug Development

  • Idiosyncratic Toxicity

  • Species Issues (e.g. Rat to Human)

  • Evidence-Based Toxicology

If you would like to submit a proposal to give a presentation or display a poster at this meeting, please submit a title and brief, 3-5 sentence summary of a proposed topic on your recent work in the area of preclinical drug safety.

All proposals are subject to review by the Scientific Advisory Committee to ensure the highest quality of the conference program.
